The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is comprised of 21 men’s fraternities recognized by this governing entity, and an executive board of 11 officers. The Interfraternity Council serves as the supervisory body of its member fraternities at the University of Maryland; its purpose is to provide for the general welfare, and social, scholastic, and recreational activities of the members of the fraternities at the university; and to instill in them the highest regard for the traditions and institutions of the University of Maryland. The IFC serves as the intermediary between students, the University, and the City of College Park.

Recruitment Information

The Interfraternity Council welcomes any student in good standing at the University of Maryland - College Park to consider membership in a recognized fraternity. Any student interested in joining an IFC chapter must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA and at least 12 credits to be eligible to participate in recruitment. Organizations may have higher GPA or credit requirements than the University standard; please ask the organization about their membership standards throughout the process.

The IFC sets the recruitment timeline for each semester and determines the date all member organizations may begin to extend invitations (bids) to membership. IFC chapters may recruit throughout each semester, on a rolling basis. The Multicultural Greek Council is currently home to 13 dynamic Greek-letter organizations whose core values include scholarship, leadership, fellowship, philanthropy, and cultural awareness. At the University of Maryland, MGC includes, but is not limited to, member organizations of The National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO), The National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC), and The National Asian Pacific Islander American Panhellenic Association (NAPA).

The purposes of the Multicultural Greek Council are to effectively represent the organizations in the council, to promote cultural awareness to the campus population, to serve and engage with the local community, and to promote unification and support of all fraternities and sororities at the University of Maryland.

Recruitment Information

Potential members should show interest in an organization by attending informational sessions/rush events, the organization's general events, and by doing community service with the organization. Potential members will also have opportunities to get to know members before beginning the intake process. GPA requirements are different for every chapter, but the minimum requirements to join any chapter are a 2.5 cumulative GPA and at least 12 college credits.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, University of Maryland chapter is currently comprised of five historically Black Greek-letter organizations: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The National Pan-Hellenic Council serves as the governing body of all member fraternities and sororities at the University of Maryland; its purpose is to ensure unity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek-letter collegiate fraternities and sororities and to engage with causes of mutual interest to its member organizations.

The University of Maryland Panhellenic Association (PHA) is the governing body for the 16 National Panhellenic Conference sororities on campus. Its mission is to unite the Panhellenic community and build better women through women's leadership, service, and character development as guided by the values of Fraternity. Each sorority elects a delegate to represent their chapter during the school year, sharing information, discussing issues of concern and interest, and voting on policies and procedures. Nine women are elected to serve on the Executive Board, and a staff advisor from the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life works closely with them.

Recruitment Information

The Panhellenic Association welcomes any student in good standing at the University of Maryland - College Park to consider membership in a PHA chapter. Any student interested in joining must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA and at least 12 credits to be eligible to participate in recruitment. Organizations may have higher GPA or credit requirements than the University standard; please ask the organization about their membership standards throughout the recruitment process.

Primary recruitment is held during the first two weekends of class in the spring semester each year, and every chapter takes new members at this time. Each woman interested in the recruitment process should register via Campus Director and pay the registration fee. Some chapters that have space may take members in the fall semester or in the spring semester after Primary Recruitment ends. More information is listed here.
